According to an estimate by E24, <span style="font-style: italic;">Age of Conan </span>has no more than 100,000 subscribers left.<br><br><span style="font-style: italic;">Age of Conan</span> publisher <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/funcom/1336" id="tag" title="Creator of MMORPG Age of Conan">Funcom</a> posted an operating loss of US  23.3 million in their financial report for Q4, caused by a depreciation of US  22.8 million due to an underpeforming <span style="font-style: italic;">Age of Conan</span>. Following the resignation of Funcom co-founder <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/gaute-godager/10732" id="tag" title="game director">Gaute Godager</a> who was dissatisfied with the MMORPG, Funcom announced that they'll be closing more than half of its servers, bringing the count from 49 down to just 18. This time, it's chief financial officer Olav Sandnes' turn to throw in the towel.<br><br><span style="font-style: italic;">Age of Conan</span> was the third best selling PC game in 2009, behind only <span style="font-style: italic;">World of Warcraft</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Spore</span>.<br><br>]]></description>

This is what the conservative Christian investment firm, The Timothy Plan, warns for parents planning to get games for their kids. Apart from the usual gaming no-no's, such as sex, violence, and substance abuse, the investment firm also flags games with homosexual content as inappropriate and unsafe for minors.<br><br>For this, The Timothy Plan hands out a list of the 30 "most offensive" games on the market. They maintain a "Do Not Buy List" for morally responsible consumers, against publishers that trade in abortion, porno, anti-family entertainment, and vices. They evaluate games on these eight categories: Sex, Nudity, Gay &amp; Lesbian, Violence, Language, Drugs, Alcohol, and Game Addiction. They also specified if games have "demonic" content.<br><br>The usual suspects are all here: <span style="font-style: italic;">Grand Theft Auto IV </span><span id="iTxt"><span id="iTxt">(<a title="Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 4 Xbox 360" href="http://xbox360.qj.net/category/Grand-Theft-Auto-4/cid/1748">Xbox 360</a>, <a title="Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 4 PS3" href="http://ps3.qj.net/category/Grand-Theft-Auto-4/cid/1747">PlayStation 3</a>) </span></span>and <span style="font-style: italic;">Saint's Row 2</span> <span id="iTxt">(<a href="http://xbox360.qj.net/category/Saints-Row-2/cid/4407" title="Saints Row 2 for the Xbox 360">Xbox 360</a> and <a href="http://ps3.qj.net/category/Saints-Row-2/cid/4408" title="Saints Row 2 for the PlayStation 3">PlayStation 3</a>) </span>(both of which have a check mark on seven of eight categories - even gay content), <span style="font-style: italic;">Fallout 3 </span><span id="iTxt">(<a href="http://ps3.qj.net/category/Fallout-3/cid/3986" title="Fallout 3 for the PlayStation 3">PS3</a>, <a href="http://xbox360.qj.net/category/Fallout-3/cid/3985" title="Fallout 3 for the Xbox 360">Xbox 360</a>, PC)</span>, and <span style="font-style: italic;">Age of Conan</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">World of Warcraft </span>to name a few. If they're such phobes about gay content, I'm surprised they didn't tag <span style="font-style: italic;">Manhunt 2</span> with a gay title.<br><br>They made a lot of comments that made me laugh, here are a few of my favorites:<br><ul><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">God of War II: </span>"This game has a sex mini-game. During the "game," you press one of the four main <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/ps2/2464" id="tag" title="PlayStation 2, second console in the PlayStation series by Sony.">PS2</a> buttons when indicated, which causes the women to moan louder, helping them reach climax." Now that's a detailed review!</li><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Saints Row 2: </span>"Homosexual Encounters: ...Characters like Randy the Tranny were used in marketing the game."</li><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">BioShock: </span>"Strong Language: Strong profanity including the   f-word  , as well as numerous others we prefer to not include in this report." Wow, that's some hardcore swearing! Not to self: Get <span style="font-style: italic;">BioShock.</span></li><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Manhunt 2</span>: "Strong Language: Strong Language: The game's first two words are "Holy F  k."</li><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Blitz: The League II</span>: "Suggestive Themes: Females appear in miniskirts with thong underwear only to be spanked by players during touchdown celebrations."</li><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Bully: Scholarship Edition</span>: "Homosexual Encounters: Gay achievements such as   over the rainbow   can be reached on the Xbox 360 when you kiss 20 boys."</li><li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Army of Two</span>: Homosexual Encounters: (not mentioned): Somewhat homo-erotic undertones between the two main characters are present.</li></ul><br>Well, I guess they're not looking forward to joining FLAG, but hey, this was worth a few laughs. 	<title><![CDATA[Blizzard: WoW for PS3, 360 is a 'square peg, round hole thing']]></title>

        <description><![CDATA[<img alt="Final Fantasy 13 - PS3 to 360 - Image 1" title="Final Fantasy 13 - PS3 to 360 - Image 1" src="http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/123434/ff13-square-peg.jpg?903161" style="cursor: pointer;" align="right">Apparently, some people are still thinking of the viability of having <span style="font-style: italic;">World of Warcraft</span> on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Well, it's one of the most successful MMORPGs of all-time, so maybe porting it over to other platforms is a good thing, for financial reasons (if you're following <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/square-enix/281" id="tag" title="Game developer, Father of Final Fantasy series">Square Enix</a>'s line of thought).<br><br>However, running parallel to <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/hideo-kojima/449" id="tag" title="Father Of the Metal Gear Series">Hideo Kojima</a>'s statement yesterday (about <span style="font-style: italic;">MGS4</span> being impossible for the Xbox 360 because the game wasn't designed for the 360 in the first place), <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/j--allen-brack/14855" id="tag" title="Blizzard Lead Producer for World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King">J. Allen Brack</a> and <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/tom-chilton/8301" id="tag" title="WoW BC lead designer">Tom Chilton</a> of <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/blizzard/76" id="tag" title="Father of Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo Series">Blizzard</a> both agree that <span style="font-style: italic;">WoW</span> was always intended to be played on the PC.<br><br>In a recent interview with Videogamer, they both reiterated the fact that <span style="font-style: italic;">WoW</span> won't be heading for consoles.<br><br>Brack says that WoW was "designed to have a keyboard and a mouse" and that the controls are really - to use Kojima's word from yesterday - <span style="font-style: italic;">optimized</span> for a PC control scheme. Brack continues: "If you think about mapping those controls and all those different type of buttons that you have to a console without a keyboard for chatting, it's a very challenging proposition."<br><br>Chilton, likewise, explained that it's not a worthwhile endeavor to bring WoW to consoles;<br><br><p style="padding-left: 40px; padding-right: 40px;">It's really not that we have anything against consoles," Chilton said. "I mean we love console games also. And I'm sure there will be a successful MMO sometime on a console. So it has nothing to do with that. It's just more like a square peg round hole thing for our game. It just wasn't designed with that in mind.</p><p style="padding-left: 40px; padding-right: 40px;"><br></p><iframe src="http://digg.com/api/diggthis.php?u=http://digg.com/gaming_news/Blizzard_WoW_for_PS3_360_is_a_square_peg_round_hole_thing" allowtransparency="true" background-color="transparent" style="margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px;" align="right" scrolling="no" width="55" frameborder="0" height="82"></iframe>But then... when Videogamer raised the point that Funcom will be bringing their <span style="font-style: italic;">Age of Conan</span> to the Xbox 360 - and that they've got some technology to map the keyboard buttons to a 360 controller - Chilton simply replies that he thinks that <span style="font-style: italic;">WoW</span> wouldn't be "a very good experience playing like that."<br><br>While the PS3 has the upcoming Wireless Keypad, and the 360 its Chatpad, they aren't all that big, y'know.         <description><![CDATA[<img alt="Leipzig 2008 - Image 1" title="Leipzig 2008 - Image 1" src="http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/123377/gc-leipzig.jpg?092789" style="cursor: pointer;" align="right">With the <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/leipzig/4143" id="tag" title="German city; where GCDC 2007 will take place">Leipzig</a> Games Convention 2008 finally closing its curtains, we now get confirmation that next year's event has already been scheduled. The announcement was made via press release by Leipziger Messe GmbH CEO Wolfgang Marzin: GC 2009 will be held from August 19 to 23, also in Leipzig.<br><br>Along with the announcement, we hear of a survey conducted to this year's event's visitors, asking them if they'd want to see another GC next year.<br><br>Among all the visitors - whether trade exhibitor or part of the general public (some of which have travelled from half way across the world just to see the show) - a vast majority of about 90  agreed.<br><br>This makes me think of what the outcome would have been if a survey like this were conducted at the end of this year's E3, but moving on...<br><br><iframe src="http://digg.com/api/diggthis.php?u=http://digg.com/gaming_news/Games_Convention_2009_scheduled_good_turnout_this_year" allowtransparency="true" background-color="transparent" style="margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px;" align="right" scrolling="no" width="55" frameborder="0" height="82"></iframe>GC 2008's success is proven by the sheer number of visitors who dropped in: over the four-day period, some 203,000 people came in. While it's already been noted before (check related articles below), <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/funcom/1336" id="tag" title="Creator of MMORPG Age of Conan">Funcom</a> product manager <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/erling-ellingsen/3845" id="tag" title="">Erling Ellingsen</a> in the <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/leipzig/4143" id="tag" title="German city; where GCDC 2007 will take place">Leipzig</a> Games Convention reaffirmed that the movie and their game will be going hand-in-hand with each other.<br><br>How so? Here's what Ellingsen had to say:<br><br><p style="padding-left: 40px; padding-right: 40px;">The movie is set for release next year, and it's going to be a huge movie. Lionsgate recently announced that they're putting a hundred million dollars into it. We have a very close relationship with the guys making the movie. I had lunch with the producer just the other day. We're talking to them all the time. Yes, we will tie the two together.</p><br><iframe src="http://digg.com/api/diggthis.php?u=http://digg.com/movies/Conan_movie_and_Age_of_Conan_MMORPG_to_be_closely_linked" allowtransparency="true" background-color="transparent" style="margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px;" align="right" scrolling="no" width="55" frameborder="0" height="82"></iframe>Talk all they might, they have yet to find, ultimately, a director and their cast. Despite this future hurdle that they would eventually have to cross, it's pretty rare that a product manager for a game and a movie producer would be talking about their projects. Chances are, we might see some new content for <span style="font-style: italic;">Age of Conan</span> that would be coming from the movie, and vice-versa.<br><br>Wait, did someone say new content? You know what that means: ten thousand more weekly patches! Funcom Product Manager Erling Ellingson gave some great details on what we can expect from the pack too.<br><br><iframe src="http://digg.com/api/diggthis.php?u=http://digg.com/pc_games/Concept_art_for_Age_of_Conan_expansion_pack_to_be_released" allowtransparency="true" background-color="transparent" style="margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px;" scrolling="no" width="55" align="right" frameborder="0" height="82"></iframe>Today, Eurogamer revealed that Funcom has released a new teaser image for the coming expansion pack. Although the concept art itself has not been released yet (wait till tomorrow, folks), Eurogamer does say that it shows<br><br><p style="padding-left: 40px; padding-right: 40px;">[...] three ninja-like warriors wearing green masks with a strongly oriental look. In the background are green banners decorated with dragons, and pagoda-like buildings.</p><p style="padding-left: 40px; padding-right: 40px;"><br></p><p style="padding-left: 40px; padding-right: 40px;">[...] the prominent oriental stylings suggest that the expansion will take players to the land of Khitai, Conan author <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/robert-e--howard/3932" id="tag" title="">Robert E. Howard</a>'s version of <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/china/1332" id="tag" title="Asian country, most populated country.">China</a> in the Hyborian Age. </p><br>Speculate away. The expansion pack is said to be up for release next year. First off, he cleared up the <span style="font-style: italic;">WoW</span> - <span style="font-style: italic;">AoC</span> comparison:<br><br><p style="padding-left: 40px; padding-right: 40px;"><span style="font-style: italic;">Age of Conan</span> is not comparable to <a href="http://wow.qj.net/category/News/cid/2738"><span title="More WoW news" style="font-style: italic;">World of Warcraft</span></a>'s amount of high level content as <span style="font-style: italic;">World of Warcraft</span> stands today. Remember that game has had 3-4 years to mature and evolve [...] so we really can't compete with that at this point in time. That's no secret at all. <span style="font-style: italic;">World of Warcraft</span> didn't have anything near the amount of high level content at launch as they have now.</p><br>Along with the answers came reveals. Ymir's Pass is "just about done" and it's only a matter of testing before it goes live. Drunken brawling, one of the big things cut from the game before launch, will also be added along with other promised features and content once Funcom finishes dealing with "more important issues". Well, that's exactly what one Somchai Jaroen-amnuaysuk of the Welfare Promotion, Protection and Empowerment of Vulnerable Groups Office said recently.<br><br>To quote the official:<br><br><p style="padding-left: 40px; padding-right: 40px;"> When a player copycats a crime he or she sees in the game, the game maker should be prosecuted. Prosecutions will automatically force game makers to act more responsibly.</p><br>We foresee quite a number of logistical problems (among other concerns) in implementing such a thing, should such an idea ever become a law. Thankfully, it's just one government official speaking his mind. Furthermore, a second survey by the group showed that parents considered content showing sex and sexuality as more offensive than depictions of violence.<br><br>Here's an excerpt from the What They Play press release, <a rel="nofollow" title="External Link to GamePolitics What They Play coverage" target="_blank" href="http://www.gamepolitics.com/2008/08/11/survey-parents-fear-kids039-exposure-video-games-more-alcohol-smut-amp-violence">courtesy of GamePolitics</a> (external link):<br><br><p style="padding-left: 40px; padding-right: 40px;">  Nearly 3,000 respondents in two separate What They Play polls concluded that drinking beer and watching pornography were less objectionable activities for children than playing certain video games. Further, viewing violence was more acceptable than seeing content involving sex and sexuality within games.</p><br>The first survey What They Play took was conducted from April 4-10, 2008, and asked 1,266 participants what they were most offended by in videogames. Here's the breakdown, according to the poll:<br><ul><li>a man and woman having sex (37 )</li><li>two men kissing (27 )</li><li>a graphically severed head (25 )</li><li>multiple use of the F-word (9 ).</li></ul>The second survey, done from August 1-6, 2008 looked at what parents were most worried about their kids indulging in while at a sleepover. Here's what the press release said about that:<br><br><p style="padding-left: 40px; padding-right: 40px;">  More than 1,600 respondents revealed they  re more apprehensive about their child smoking marijuana (49 ) and playing the video game <span style="font-style: italic;">Grand Theft Auto</span> (19 ), than watching pornography (16 ) and drinking beer (14 ).</p><br>While the usual social issues (alcohol, drugs, and porn) are all present in many a parents' list of worries, it seems videogames are slowly emerging as a social issue that many parents fear can be detrimental to their kids.         <description><![CDATA[<img alt="Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures - Image 1" title="Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures - Image 1" src="http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/122941/Age-of-Conan-large.jpg?795144" style="cursor: pointer;" align="right">The fugitive system which has yet to make it to <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/funcom/1336" id="tag" title="Creator of MMORPG Age of Conan">Funcom</a>'s <a title="Funcom's Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures MMORPG" href="http://aoc.qj.net/category/News/cid/5094"><span style="font-style: italic;">Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures</span></a> live servers and yet has been the topic of much talk among the community. We've heard some people complain about it saying that it won't help, while others have been more positive towards this new feature.<br><br>So far, here's a quick look at how the system works. Each player gets a certain amount of murder points for killing a character with a lower level. It's pegged at 100 per kill if I'm not mistaken. Now once you hit 1000 murder points, you become a fugitive.<br><br>What does it mean when you become a fugitive? It means that you become a prime target for other players as killing you will not increase the murder points of any character. In addition, you will randomly drop an item each time a player kills you.<br><br>Now, it is possible for players to lower their murder points. As of this article's writing, it is by just simply waiting it out since the murder points drop by a certain number over a span of time or by getting killed. <br><br>Theoretically this sounds good, but like all systems, there are ways of breaking it which I'm sure may be painfully obvious to the more experienced MMORPG players out there. <br><br><img alt="Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures - Image 1" title="Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures - Image 1" src="http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/122941/AgeOfConan_Logo-small-box-lower-right.jpg?836951" style="cursor: pointer;" align="left">The first, and probably the most glaring <a href="http://aoc.qj.net/tags/exploit/4280" id="tag" title="">exploit</a> in my opinion, would be a group of lowbies teaming up to take down higher leveled characters. <br><br>I'm not really sure if the developers have taken this into consideration yet, but a group of lowbies can take out one high leveled character with no fear of retribution. To make matters worse, if the higher leveled character retaliates he or she will be penalized by the system.<br><br>The second, and perhaps one that should scare the developers more, is if the community decides to ignore this new system and just go on playing as they normally do. You'll still end up with a group of fugitives in their 80s ganking people just as badly as when the system was introduced.
